Your TTRPG Class Says You're a Disaster, and That’s Beautiful

Choosing your class in a TTRPG can feel like picking a Hogwarts house, a starter Pokémon, or a gay awakening — meaningful, weirdly personal, and possibly something you overthink for the next three hours.

Whether you're playing Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or any other class-based TTRPG, one thing's true: your class is more than stats. It's a vibe.

If you're overwhelmed by choices or just don’t want to end up stuck playing the party cleric again (unless that’s your thing #blessisconcentration), here’s your guide to picking the right class for you.

Step 1: Are You the Drama? (or do you want to be?)

Some classes are extra. They’re all about big moves, big speeches, and bigger consequences. Others excel discreetly—strategically analyzing situations behind the scenes, safeguarding allies, or contributing in subtle ways that may go unnoticed.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want to be an ensemble character?

  • Do I want to be the support who saves the day at the last second?

  • Do I want to vibe in the corner until it’s time to throw fire?

Big Drama Energy? Try Bard, Paladin, or Sorcerer. DPS Strategist? Try Rogue, Druid, or Wizard. Emotional Support Tank? Fighter or Cleric. Certified Gremlin? Warlock or Monk.

Step 2: Pick a Playstyle, Not a Spreadsheet

Don’t worry about “what’s optimal.” Worry about what sounds fun.

Here’s a cheat sheet based on how you like to play:

  • Love action games? Try Fighter, Barbarian, or Ranger. You get in, hit stuff, and keep it moving.

  • Big into anime arcs and personal growth? Sorcerer, Warlock, or Monk. Welcome to character development inc.

  • Like support classes in video games? Cleric, Bard, or Druid. You’re the heart of the party.

  • Need to outsmart every puzzle? Wizard, Rogue, or Artificer. You will try to hack god (yes god has a stat block).

Step 3: Pick What Makes You Feel Powerful (and Seen)

You can choose your class based on vibes. That’s valid.

  • Are you a sad bisexual with a tragic backstory and secrets? Warlock. (we already know you’re a tiefling).

  • Do you want to sing songs, inspire your friends, and sling insults for emotional damage? Bard.

  • Do you bring snacks and take notes in a color-coded binder? Cleric or Wizard.

  • Do you want to punch the moon? Monk.

  • Are you Just Tired™ and want to hit stuff and nap? Fighter or Barbarian.

  • Do you romanticize plants and cry about frogs? Druid.

TTRPGs are about playing a version of yourself — or someone you’d never dare be. Pick what feels right for you, not what feels “meta.”

Bonus: Consider the Party

Ask your GM or table what others are playing! You might:

  • Lean into balance (nobody picked a support? You could be the MVP)

  • Go full chaos (everyone’s a magic user? Let’s burn the world together)

But don’t feel obligated to fill a role. It’s a party, not a contest.

You don’t need to be good at math. You don’t need to powergame. You just need to pick a class that makes you want to show up and say:

“I wanna laugh! I want to do something epic. Can I roll for it?”
